For Project Developers
CFIF deploys 100% of contributed funds as non-repayable grants to eligible Canadian clean fuel and emissions-reduction projects. We also structure capital to make projects bankable to institutional lenders.
What CFIF Funds
CFIF deploys capital to Canadian projects with clear pathways to verified emissions reductions and clean fuel production capacity.
Ethanol, biodiesel, hydrogenated renewable diesel (HRD), and renewable diesel production facilities.
Anaerobic digestion, landfill gas capture, and biomethane upgrading projects.
Green and blue hydrogen projects with clear CI pathways under the CFR methodology.
Bio-based feedstocks co-processed in conventional petroleum refineries to reduce lifecycle carbon intensity.
Process efficiency improvements, methane capture, and CCUS at existing fuel production facilities.
Blending terminals, renewable fuel distribution, hydrogen refueling infrastructure, and EV charging infrastructure.
Grant structure
All CFIF funding is deployed as non-repayable grants. CFIF does not take equity or seek financial returns. Projects are not required to repay grant capital.
CFIF makes your project bankable
CFIF is the only ERFP structuring capital to absorb the regulatory risk that prevents banks from lending to clean fuel projects. A CFIF-backed project can attract institutional debt financing that would otherwise be unavailable.
Evaluation Process
Projects must demonstrate a credible, measurable pathway to verified emissions reductions. CFIF evaluates the scale, permanence, and additionality of anticipated reductions.
Prior execution experience in the relevant fuel type or technology. CFIF evaluates management capability alongside project economics.
Concept through operational and expansion-stage projects are all welcome. Early engagement helps CFIF understand the pipeline.
Projects must demonstrate a path to commercial viability. CFIF evaluates the economics of the project, not just the grant request.
CFIF funds projects at Technology Readiness Level (TRL) 7 or above — technologies that have been demonstrated in an operational environment. Projects at TRL 9 receive higher priority in the evaluation process, as commercial-ready projects can deploy capital and generate verified emissions reductions more quickly.
